Microsoft's Plans for the 360

3 MORE YEARS?

A bit of a shock when you take the whole XBOX One launching-thing in a couple months, but in all actuality its a good idea.

Microsoft has announced that the 360 will continue to see support, including another 100 games over the next 3 years--which should be enough time for the ONE to get a solid foothold.

Chief Marketing and Strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi, in a technology conference addressed the future of Microsoft's wildly successive console.

“We’re going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert. So it’s not like the day we ship Xbox One your 360 won’t work. We’ll continue to support it.”

Later, when asked about having both consoles supplemented side-by-side until 2016, Mehdi replied with:

“You’ve seen us over the years constantly be focused on profitability and improving year over year. There are different points in the cycle of when you invest in new hardware."

“If you look at 360 that platform lasted for seven to eight years and it’s going to go for another three years. It’s incredibly profitable now in the tail. Some of these things take some time in the launch year in which you invest, and then they they play out over time.

“We’ve seen our Xbox Live subscription service continue to grow. We’re up to 48 million members now. We’re shipping more games than we’ve ever done before. Those are things I look to to say, ‘hey we can grow not just top line revenue but also profitability.’”

Another 3 years is a long additional lifespan, but considering the PS2, Gamecube, Wii, and MOST systems successful enough continue well after a NEW console's release...so it'll be fun to see how the 360 and ONE can co-habitate.

Well, that's good. I know many people who have their 360, and love it.
They're mostly casual gamers who aren't really bothered by new consoles and all that, because they don't see the point of upgrading since they already have what they have.

Actually I'm a bit surprised by this.. XD My guess is that they decided to keep the 360 around a bit longer just encase no one decides to invest in their Xbone console. xp

Its not a sign of no faith in the XBOX One, its what all companies do...look how long the PS2 lasted? Well past the PS3 release, cause it was still a viable option, and 360 was the 2nd best selling console in the generation.

Yea but unlike the PS2 or the PS3 which are both worth investing in: neither the XBone or PS4 are worth investing in at this juncture.. At least impo.

This isnt about the PS4 or ONE its about the 360 getting an extended life, like all consoles have when new ones come out...and both new consoels are worth investing in cause they the future...and its always a bit of a gamble but it'll be worth it

Theses consoles are not the future... They are underpowered gaming rigs. A true console experience is something initiative that sets gaming pc's and consoles apart... Only the Wii U has this, thanks to the gamepad, usage of previous controllers, and  features like Miiverse.. (unless you count using a PS Vita as a controller for PS4, but I don't.) Yes, you can capture gaming footage on both consoles, but they invented something called capture cards for that too.

So until I see a feature that solely screams PS4 or Xbone, they are not the future of gaming.

I don't see why people really complain about all the extra features that the consoles have such as having web browsing abilities, watching tv, etc. I mean it does nothing to affect you if you want to get it just to play games. If that's what you want it for then get it and just use it for that. I don't see how any other features hinder your ability to do this.

Heck, I mean the WiiU does it too and so did all of this past generations consoles. I think having more options is actually a good idea. Of course you will be paying more for these features even if at first you don't want them, but they're there if you ever decide to use it. Plus it's not like they can make a console specifically for every individual so they try to add what they can to make it the best they can.

I actually think it's cool that they're extending the life of the 360 for 3 years. I mean like Fyree said it's not unusual for a company to do this, but I've never seen them do it for this long. I mean Nintendo's already shut down stuff for the Wii and has it even been a year yet? So yeah this is definitely cool of them. Especially having still over 100 titles lined up for it.

Well this is extremely good news for me, because I am not buying any of the next-gen consoles until the price drops a couple hundred dollars. Glad to know I can still enjoy new games without forking over so much money.

exactly, and it shows Microsoft isn't as BAD as most anti-MS people claim they are.
EVERY gaming company makes a ton of poor decisions(don't get me started on my irks with Nintendo)---Microsoft is a PROVEN piece of the Gaming World.
