SORTA SAW IT COMING...
Recent news in the Gaming World has a lot of people talking about whether or not the future of gaming will be decided in a market that Nintendo has dominated for over a quarter of a century--bringing the question to the surface of whether or not Sony will take the next step and venture into a more Mobile-based gaming option like Nintendo has with not only merging with Mobile company DNA Gaming, but also fully lock into Mobile/Smartphone gaming as they will next year with the launch of POKEMON GO.
But Sony has just come out and said that their plans for a PS VITA 2, or further Handheld/Mobile gaming ventures aren't ever going to see the light.
The fate for Sony's handheld future was pretty much written-in with the Vita's cost seemingly in the stratosphere for a handheld, a lackluster(overall) library of games that were never marketed or could never grasp the wider audience that Nintendo's line of Gameboys, DS'es and 3DS'es seem to always lock on firmly to, as well as the other, but not-to-be-forgotten additions such as Backwards compatibility and those insanely overpriced Vita memory cards.
Some numbers that likely lead ultimately to Sony's decision---only 13 of the top selling 50 Vita games were 1st party. Compare to 35 of 50 top selling 3DS games---some may say Sony has a great 3rd party line-up, but a great 3rd party line-up can't hold a torch to a TOP quality 1st party line-up that can literally sell millions of games and systems by themselves. The BEST selling Vita game, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, merely topped at 1.47 million--putting it comparatively at #32 of 50 if it were on 3DS(for sales).
Sony IS sort of pushing the blame to others--claiming the Vita's lacking numbers are apparently due to Mobile gaming(Android, iOS) taking a lot of the steam from the market of potential Vita gamers. One HAS to then look and see how Nintendo has not only led the Handheld gaming market since 1989, helped pave the way for what we now know as MOBILE gaming, but also has fully grasped Mobile gaming and will likely lead the way for whatever the future holds. A future that Sony clearly isn't ready for--and will likely miss out on entirely unless they come to their senses, or can bring the world something truly spectacular--something on the level of whatever Nintendo's NX may be, or something that can set the trend in the Handheld or Mobile market that could be the NEXT Gameboy or DS-caliber device.
