Well after about 2 weeks of thoroughly playing through Shovel Knight on Nintendo 3DS, I can safely say this is one of the BEST Indie titles of ALL-TIME!
I will elaborate a bit.
STORY
The story of Shovel Knight is about the titular knight going off to save his friend Shield Knight, from the "Enchantress and the Order of No Quarter", the villians/bosses of the game.
GAMEPLAY
You play as Shovel Knight, and as such, your main weapon is a shovel that you can use to whack enemies with, and also to do a downward thrust, similar to DuckTales' pogo jump. Throughout the levels, you dig up gold/treasures with your shovel. You use gold to buy health upgrades and to increase your magic. You need magic to use the many "relics" in the game, including a fireball which you shoot out of your shovel, and an invincibility relic which allows you to not take damage from enemies for a few seconds. Later on in the game, you'll also be able to buy armor upgrades, which changes Shovel Knights' armor, and gives him different abilities.
GRAPHICS
The art style in Shovel Knight should be familiar to any retro gamer, as they are in the same style as your favorite 8/16 bit games of old. Beautifully drawn and on the 3DS version, the 3D looks great!
MUSIC
The music in Shovel Knight is also amazing! Composed by Jake Kaufman, the man behind such classic soundtracks such as Mighty Switch Force 1&2, DuckTales: Remastered, and Double Dragon Neon! If you want to hear this amazing soundtrack, and Jakes' other OSTs, go here!
CONTROLLER OPTIONS
The Wii U version supports pretty much every controller you'd want to use:
Wii U GamePad
Wii U Pro Controller
Wii Remote
Wii Remote with Nunchuck
Wii Classic Controller
Wii Classic Controller Pro
P.C/Steam
The P.C version of Shovel Knight includes so many controller options, I can't even list them all here, just go here for all your controller needs on PC!
VERSION SPECIFICS
This review was mainly covering the 3DS version of the game, since I played the 3DS version the most, but I will go into detail about the other versions as well!
Wii U FEATURES
The Wii U version has Off-TV play, Miiverse functionality, and in-game achievements.
3DS FEATURES
The 3DS version includes full 3D, Miiverse, in-game achievements, as well as Street Pass functionality, which is essentially a Mario Bros. arcade style game where when you pass someone, you battle them for 5 seconds for treasure!
P.C FEATURES
The P.C/Steam version has achievements(both in-game and steam ones), Steam trading cards, etc.
FINAL VERDICT
Shovel Knight is a MUST HAVE for any retro gamer wanting to relive the glory days of the NES/SNES!
FINAL SCORE: 95/100
