Here's a throwback all the way back to 2004. I thought I would do a review on these games since I have been playing my copy of FireRed the past couple of weeks.
I'd like to start with saying I'm probably quite a bit biased as I believe this to be one of the 3 really great generations of Pokemon. I believe the first three generations were all great, and the fourth was just good. That's really where I believe they started to slip. The fifth gen. was a real struggle for me even though there were some good designs. From what I've seen so far of the sixth gen. it seems like a step up from the last generation.
From the start one of the things I dislike about the game is waiting until after the first gym to get the running shoes. It definitely slows things down quite a bit. Aside from that most things continue pretty smoothly and very enjoyable in the game. One thing that you start to notice is a bit of a lack of variety in Pokemon. I mean, yes, over the course of the whole game you do finally get to a lot of them, but the process of getting some can be tiresome. You don't really have a lot of options when you come to certain types. One example would be for fire, unless you chose Charmander at the beginning, you don't have very many choices. In FireRed and LeafGreen you can only catch Growlithe and Vulpix, respectively, about halfway through the game. There are only a couple more you get later on such as Magmar, Flareon, Moltres, and Ponyta.
Some of the items are quite rare as well. An example very personally felt to me is the Lucky Egg. The only way to get a Lucky Egg is to catch a Chansey that is holding the item. You can only catch a Chansey in the Safari Zone with an appearance rate of only 4% and only 5% of those are holding a Lucky Egg. The catch rate maybe the next thing you are wondering, well my record is only 5 out of 49.
Once you get past those problems the game is really enjoyable. It has a great story line and isn't a game that you are going to beat in one playing session. There is plenty of things to do within the game to keep you busy for a while. Also after you beat the game you can catch other Pokemon not from Gen. 1 which may help you create a more well rounded team.
Some battles can be a little challenging, especially since you probably won't have fully created your team until later on in the game with the lack of being able to find the Pokemon you want. The great thing about that is that it adds a little bit of a challenge but not so hard that you are going to have a tough time trying to beat it.
Overall this is a pretty good game. 8/10
