ANOTHER DOMINO ABOUT TO FALL...
It's just becoming a sign of the times in Gaming, as over the last several years Game companies ONCE great have seemingly fallen one after another. Some, those that have survived, are scraping by with IP's that were once as big as any--but there are some, like Konami, who's throw in the towel, and chosen the ONLY (apparent) option left---they're going MOBILE.
Speaking to NIKKEI, Konami's Hideki Hayakawa has announced that the company that gave us a TON of great games since the 1980 and 1990's--Arcade, Nintendo, Sega, Sony and others have been graced with--and going into MOBILE as their main platform, joining SEGA as another once-great company who's only doing what one that's given all they could, and still retains some hope to stay relevant.
"Our main platforms will be mobiles. Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies. With multiplatform games, there's really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world."
Like SEGA, they'll focus on pay-to and free-to play games for all your iOS and Android devices, they already have several IP's lined up:
"Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like 'items' to selling things like 'features'. We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power Pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before."
Adding to a fire already fueled by METAL GEAR's Kojima leaving the company, SILENT HILLS being cancelled---you can't necessarily blame Konami, even if you want to gripe and moan. The Gaming world has changed SO much in just a short time, that there will undoubtedly be MORE companies opting for Mobile as an easier and simpler option--even with such famed series and IPs, there's almost TOO much competition now, and with only 3 BIG Console companies, unlike in Konami's heyday of the 80's/90's where there were dozens of systems from Atari, Neo Geo, TurboGrafx, and other companies competing with each other.
It's SAD to see a company have to go this route.
But it's just time.
