BASICALLY A BUY-ONE-GET-ONE-FREE KINDA THING
All I can say is it TOOK long enough for Nintendo to implement this for the Wii U and 3DS eShops, and now we can enjoy what SONY has been doing with the PSN for years already--If you DL a game on the 3DS or Wii U eShop and that game is on BOTH systems, you can play BOTH versions in their entirety.
This means if BOTH of your game systems are synched via the NNID and obviously your eShop Account, then you won't have to buy the same game--say a VIRTUAL CONSOLE game that spans across both 3DS and Wii U, OR an Indie title, etc--which is something we've NEEDED since the eShop's became ONE last year.
HOWEVER...Nintendo hasn't fully implemented it yet. The first title to take advantage will be SQUIDS ODYSSEY coming to 3DS which, if purchased digitally for the handheld WILL be playable for FREE on Wii U. But, sadly, this has only been announced for Europe, and not yet is known if it'll be the same for the US--AND it doesn't work the OTHER way, so buying it for Wii U won't get you the 3DS version free. AND it's unclear when OTHER Double-Release eShop games, including those you have already purchased and are across both platforms WILL be given the same treatment, allowing ALL identical eShop releases will be 100% universal.
MOST likely we'll get what we wish for, and everyone will be able to play 3DS and Wii U VC and eShop DL's either way.
